We recently completed an innovative SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) project at William Austin Junior School. The project, which was part of a broader initiative by Luton Borough Council, was given an award for its exceptional design and impact on the environment. This award not only highlights the success of the project but also shows the importance of sustainable drainage solutions in urban areas.
The Need for Sustainable Drainage
Built up areas often suffer with surface water runoff, which can lead to flooding and water pollution. Traditional drainage systems are not always able to handle the increased volume of water we experience because of urbanisation and climate change. This is where SuDS come in. SuDS are designed to manage rainwater close to where it falls using techniques that mimic natural processes. They help to reduce the risk of flooding, improve water quality and create habitats for wildlife.
The Award-Winning Project
The award-winning SuDS project at William Austin Junior School is a prime example of how sustainable drainage systems can be effectively integrated into school environments. The project included several Sustainable Drainage Systems to effectively manage rainwater. SuDS planters were implemented to redirect rainwater from roof downpipes through the soil, promoting plant growth. Tree pits were installed in the playground to capture runoff and store it in a nearby underground tank. Additionally, a 12,000-litre rainwater harvesting system was set up to collect rainwater from the school’s roofs which is then used to flush toilets in one of the blocks. This system is projected to save over 300,000 litres of fresh water annually with any overflow being redirected to the surface water sewer.
An important aspect of the project was addressing flooding issues at the school and reducing the flood risk. Another crucial goal was to improve the project’s eligibility for Thames Water funding by incorporating rainwater reuse, aligning with Thames Water’s funding criteria.
Educational and Environmental Impact
The SuDS project has had a positive impact on the school and its students. By introducing sustainable drainage solutions into the school grounds, we have helped create an environment for both learning and environmental responsibility. Students are now able to see the principles of sustainability in action, bringing these concepts to life!
The project has also improved the aesthetic appeal of the school grounds. The addition of greenery and natural features has created a brighter and more engaging environment for both students and staff.
